EASTERN EUROPEAN DUMPLINGS -- Home Cooking Dish of the Month, June 2021

MidwesternerTT | May 30, 202103:28 PM     41

Welcome to the Reporting Thread for our June 2021 Dish of the Month (“DOTM”), Eastern European Dumplings. The purpose of this thread is to collect reports from Hounds about their preparation of these dumplings during the month of June (and after), replete with any pictures that you may want to share.

Thanks to all the hounds who participated during the nomination and voting phases for our June 2021 DOTM. To see how we got here, you can go to our Nominations, https://www.chowhound.com/post/dish-m..., and Voting threads, https://www.chowhound.com/post/dish-m... .

To find recipes, you’ll have best results if you search with a country name (“Eastern European” won’t work) or the specific dumpling name (such as pierogis, pelmini, varenyky). The 10 countries that constitute what the UN considers to be Eastern Europe https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/w... were all once part of the eastern, communist bloc of countries led by the Soviet Union prior to 1990. Alphabetically they are: Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic (formerly, together with Slovakia, known as Czechoslovakia), Hungary, Poland, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Ukraine.

A few dumpling photos / names / recipe collections that may help us get started:
Czech - https://www.tasteatlas.com/most-popul...
Ukraine/Russia – chicken filled - https://www.jta.org/2020/05/06/food/h...
Poland / Russia– potato/cheese filled - https://cookinpolish.com/ruskie-dumpl...
Hungary – unfilled - https://www.thekitchenmagpie.com/noke...
Bulgaria – Tomato dumpling soup - https://www.food.com/recipe/bulgarian...
Romania – baked dessert - https://www.imperialtransilvania.com/...

So, let’s get going preparing and reporting on the Eastern European Dumplings that we make during June. If you do report the details of a published recipe, please respect the author’s copyright by either: (a) including a link directly to the source of the recipe, or (b) if no link is available, please do not directly quote the entire recipe. Rather use your own words to paraphrase and explain the instructions for making the dish (although you may directly quote any list and quantities of ingredients).
