Easter Weekend Recommendations -- off the beaten track?

I'm in New Orleans for a conference from Thursday to Sunday, and a friend and I are looking for good places to eat--and drink--where we can A) Have a good meal, not too expensively, AND B) Avoid the other conference-goers as much as possible. We're staying in the French Quarter, but we're willing to travel by foot, by bus, by cab, by whatever. We've both been to New Orleans before, so we're not looking for the places you should go if you want to hit the highlights or THE New Orleans experience. Instead we want to try somewhere that we can have a good (great?) meal and hang out in a relaxed setting.

Also--as a secondary consideration, one night we might get together with 8-10 other friends. Any recs for a place where spend an evening out and not overstay our welcome?

Many Thanks in advance!
