For you Watertownies (Watertonians?), I noticed two changes this weekend.
Sensational Foods, next door to Donahue's on Bigelow, had their grand opening today. They have a tasty-looking array of pastries and cakes, and a menu of various coffee blends and drinks along with sandwiches and salads. I tried a free blueberry scone and an oatmeal-raisin cookie, both of which were excellent. We went back later for sandwiches ($6-8), which took forever, but were pretty good. The Cuban was the biggest hit. The roast beef and portobello panini seemed a little heavy, but were tasty. The place is aggressively child-friendly, with kids outnumbering adults at some points while we were there. There were a few minor kinks, but I think those will be worked out. Overall, it seems like a cozy little place with friendly people and above-average food that I'm glad to see join the neighborhood.
Driving by Ararat (the roast chicken place on Arlington St., across the street from Super Fitness near the Arsenal Mall), I noticed a sign in the window saying that Lily's French Bakery will be opening there. I think that was one of the places that burned down a while ago. We're going to have more bakeries than we know what to do with.
Finally, it seems that Sepal on Nichols Ave. is shutting down. That's a shame -- I really liked that place, even though it was usually pretty empty. For now, they're apparently open sporadically, and there's a "For Lease" sign in the window.
