East Bay restaurant for simple birthday dinner?

Lillian Hsu | Dec 9, 200412:49 AM     21

I'm looking to try a new place in the East Bay to celebrate my 25th birthday this weekend.

I rarely eat anything other than Asian or Mexican food, so I'm in the mood for something different. Pricewise, something in the range of Zuni Cafe would be ideal. I'd especially like a place with excellent desserts! Of course, since this is awfully late notice, I would need a restaurant where I can still get reservations for two for Friday or Saturday night.

I'm considering Venus, A Cote, Dona Tomas (even though that's still Mexican), Rivoli, Postino in Lafayette, and possibly revisiting Eccolo (wasn't thrilled with my first visit but recent posts here have been enthusiastic.) Firefly, in the city, also intrigues me...

Any thoughts on these places or any other suggestions?

Much thanks in advance!

~Lillian
