Earth Fare - new market in South Charlotte

lsm | Jan 26, 2005 09:19 AM

I thought everyone in town already knew about this, but, some friends in Myers Park just told me they'd never heard of the place. Granted, these gals require a guide, provisions and covered wagons to venture south of Fairview Road. BTW, if your local Harris Teeter has recently expanded their organic food selection, this is the reason.

Earth Fare, a Whole Foods competitor, recently opened in Torringdon. That's a new shopping center off Johnston road, slightly north of 485, in the Ballantyne area. Think Fresh Market, but focused on organic foods and with quadruple the square footage. The new Home Economist on South Boulevard was trying for this style, but didn't quite get it.

The selection is a mostly organic with some conventional vegetable/fruit. There's a fabulous cheese selection and an interesting wine selection. Packaged goods are of the usual organic sort, but the selection is larger than any I've seen in Charlotte. Beef, pork, poultry, rabbit and a decent seafood selection are a nice change from the previously limited supply at other local stores. There's also a bakery and an in-house cafe with a salad bar.
