Dusty's and Edendale - little reviews

Clare K. | Mar 19, 200611:43 PM

Since I have been semi-laid up and owe many friends free meals for driving me around, I have been pigging out lately at various Silverlake establishments. But it's me food for thought to share with all of you:

Had dinner at Dusty's last night. We shared a bowl of the lentil soup (which happens to be vegan) and the crab cake special which, according to the waiter, had no breadcrumbs or fillers. The lentil soup was DIVINE. Perfectly seasoned and topped with an avocado and cilantro puree. I could have had a big bowl of this with their fabu bread basket (courtesy of La Brea Bakery). The crab thing was okay...was topped with one prawn and a grilled tomato with parmesan. A combo bite with the shrimp, crab and tomato was really good, but the crab on it's own was just okay.

Since I had filled up on apps and wanted to enjoy more of the bread basket, I got the smoked salmon platter, while my friend had the special Rainbow Trout with a side of veggies. The smoked salmon platter looked wholly unappetizing: A huge pile of greens with TONS of smoked salmon, covered in some sort of white-ish sauce and capers. I think it was enough for five people. The salmon tasted fine with the bread and a dab of the white sauce, but bad choice on my part for dinner. My friend's trout tasted kind of dirty (kind of like catfish does sometimes) and her veg consisted of lots of asparagus stalks (minus the spear) and carrots, both undercooked. For dessert we split the pear and almond tart a la mode, which was fabulous. Buttery, light, flakey and amazing with the muscat I ordered.

This morning (because you know after a huge meal last night I woke up hungry!), I hit Edendale Grill with another friend for brunch. I ordered the Shrimp & Bliss Hash, which was pretty damn good. It wasn't hashy - just a sautee of shrimp, fresh corn, potatoes and leeks with some bell peppers and a side of light hollaindaise sauce. Really great flavor combo. Only downside is that I had to order a side of toast since they don't offer a bread basket or complimentary toast with breakfast. Weird. My friend had the smoked salmon and cream cheese scramble, also really good. They didn't overdo the cream cheese, but again, no toast. We just split my toast order (BTW, the toast was fantastic - good sourdough).

I have never liked Edendale for dinner but would definitely go back for brunch. As for Dusty's, I'm not so sure...I have never had a great meal there. But it's probably because I've never ordered the stuff they are probably good at: steak and frjtz, roasted chicken, etc. Maybe, just maybe I will give it another shot some time in the future.

That's it for me today!
