Well, I jumped on the Dungeness bandwagon on Fri. Purchased a couple of 2-pounders from a crabber at the Santa Cruz yacht harbor for $4/lb. A nearby business was selling them for $4.25/lb., while those from Phil's at Moss Landing were going for $4.99/lb. They were worth every penny, as they were likely the BEST crabs that I've ever tasted (lately I'm having an epiphany that I've grown up w/ overcooked meat and seafood, as mom is a food bacteria-phobe).
Buying and cooking crab at home is a new venture for me, and I must say, I'm totally hooked! Read a brief article in the San Jose Mercury this AM about the glut of Dungeness right now and impact on prices, which I've linked below. Article was kind of incomplete for me (as many are), so I'm turning to you hounds who are always so helpful.
My question is: what is the general pattern of price fluctuations for the Monterey Bay area consumer during this 8-mo. crab season? Is it safe to say that I should take advantage of this initial glut, or do prices actually depress a little later in the season? Any changes in size or flavor of critters as the season plods along? The SC crabber said he'll be getting his stuff through June, so I want to plan accordingly. Thanks!
