Dungeness crab shopping in SF Chinatown

Melanie Wong | Nov 18, 200410:37 PM

Yesterday morning I did a quick tour of the handful of fish markets on Stockton St. to choose a couple live crabs to take to my parents. They ranged from $2.79 to $2.99 per pound, and as Gary Soup noted, they're a little small at this point.

I ended up buying at the place at 1117 Stoctkon with the green awning (no name, veggies on the right side and fish tanks on the left). These were $2.79, several missing a leg or claw. But they were lively, and the crabs were in a shallow tank where I could use a set of tongs to poke among them and choose my own. I found two that were intact, very lively, and weighed almost 4 pounds together.

Last night we had them steamed, just plain with no condiments for the first crab of the season. These had an exceptional amount of crab fat, even the smaller one. We had the rest tonight scrambled with some eggs and a little chopped scallion - yum!
