Querying your wisdom --- is this a real "Chinese-cuisine-thing" or is it something that the restaurant made up?

Anyways, what you have is a huge pile of picked dungeness crab (YUM!) and what you're supposed to do is mix it all up with the raw egg yolk, then open the hot steamed buns and make a crab-sandwich and eat it all. It *sounds* divine.
Except --- its all very meh. First of all, the crab didn't have much taste. It had the TEXTURE of crab, but there wasn't really any of that distinct crab sweetness. The egg yolk just made everything a bit more binded together, so that it was easier to stuff the buns with the crab/egg mixture.
The buns were really well steamed and super hot, right out of the steamer --- but as to be expected, these kinds of buns don't have much flavor. Couple that with the crab-egg mixture which didn't have much flavor, and what I got was a 1+1 = 1. A nice hot warm sandwich of not much flavor. It was OK. I didn't feel like I optimized my calories with this.
