a long time ago, i told myself to post about spots that i like but never see mentioned on the boards...that thought yielded a post about cake man raven and i'm happy to see since then a lot of enthusiastic commentary about that bakery.
so here's another one that i had in mind even back then...it comes to mind now after reading a request about fish fries. duncan's fish market on myrtle, b/w clermont and vanderbilt is a combination fish market/takeout restaurant. i've never purchased any uncooked seafood there myself, so can't really comment...but, as far as what's available, it seems to vary. there's always whiting and shrimp for sure...and i've seen at different times salmon, scallops, catfish, sea bass, etc. not a wide variety, but in the immediate area, there's not much fresh fish for sale at all.
the takeout counter offers inexpensive soul food and, sometimes, some caribbean options as well. the standard order is a fish dinner ($7), which consists of fried whiting, two sides and cornbread. the folks at duncan know how to fry up some fish. they must salt or season it before hand (but i don't really SEE black pepper or cayenne, what have you, on the fish)...it's so darn tasty! and perfectly cooked. the thin coating is crisp, the fish tender.
they also fry shrimp and have bbq chicken, roast chicken, (i think) ribs, and sometimes items like escovitch fish.
sides include rice, candied yams, mac & cheese and usually one or two greens (collards, cabbage or string beans). in the warmer months there is potato salad and cole slaw. the sides are basic and anything made w/ meat is made w/ smoked turkey (they do no pork in duncan's). oh, they do french fries, too, so you can order fish/shrimp & chips.
if you go, get the fish. and report back!
