Based on board recommendations we went to Joy Indian Restaurant on Friday night. And yes, it really is the best Indian in this part of Brooklyn. I loved the Flashing Light Manhattan Skyline light box. Just the right touch of kitsch.
I tried to order the tasting menu but the waiter pretty much laughed at me and told me it was for "babies and teenagers" and that the dishes were too small. Panicked and starving, I quickly ordered something I'd never heard of called "dumpuk". The waiter's eyes lit up and he clapped his hands and said I wouldn't be sorry. I wasn't. It was a sort of Indian pot pie with a fluffy bread baked right over the casserole. Divine. Spicy and tasty, even though my lamb dumpuk was chicken instead. I did a Google Search for Dumpuk but came up with nothing of use, except for a suggestion that perhaps I wanted to "Dump UK". I'm rather fond of the UK, though so that wasn't an option. I do know that spellings often vary from one Indian restaurant to another. Can anyone enlighten me as to the origins of this dish? Has anyone else tried it? What other names might it go by? Thanks!
