Get through Dulles Customs with Wine - is it Impossible??

Rochelle McCune | Jun 8, 200207:23 PM     13

Michael & I are going to Reims in September. We are using frequent flyer miles so we have limited flight choices. The return flight that we currently have reserved and must "purchased" by Monday, is Brussels to Dulles to SFO. Something clicked in my head regarding that itinerary, then I remembered Melanie's customs story...sure enough, it was at Dulles...and it was seconded by xxx.

So my question is...If I buy 2-4 cases of Champagne, are we going to be able get it through customs in Dulles? What are the experiences of y'all out there in Chowhoundland? Do I need to go back to United & try find another entry point into the US?

It seems f*&^ing silly to not buy Champagne in Champagne but I also don't want customs to be a huge ordeal. That said, I am from the South and know how to play that particular game (not that I believe Melanie doesn't, which is what worries me).
