Duke's Spirited Cocktails opened this summer on the plaza by alums from Spoonbar. Many of the botanicals used as flavorings and garnishes are home-grown for a hyperlocal approach to craft cocktails. We tried one round:
The fine line, $11: Sonoma Brothers Vodka, Guayaki, Verbena, House Nectarine Tarragon Bitters
The siren, $12: Vida Mezcal, Cucumber, Lime, Lemongrass, Jalapeño, Bergamot,
Subtle herbal tones in both as well as a soapy off-note, muted zesty acidity, not fruity/sweet, and not much alcohol in either. Both drinks seemed overly diluted to me and lacking in focus, more of a shadow than spirited cocktails.
Not a good first impression, and more so because Spoonbar has been a favorite watering hole for me and I expected more. Other chowhounds' experiences?
