It had been a few years since we had eaten at Duarte's, so we ventured down Highway 1 to Pescadero (about 1/2 hour north of Davenport and Santa Cruz) yesterday for an early dinner to punctuate an already-beautiful weekend -- and what a way to end the day.
The service was tentative, friendly, as usual, and their prices have seemingly stayed the same from a year or so ago.
We had their famous Artichoke Soup, Crab Cioppino, Lamb Chops with Apple Sauce, and a slice of Strawberry/Rhubarb Pie ala Mode.
The crab cioppino had a delicious broth made of celery, onions, tomatoes, and not overly salty. It came with generous portions of fresh crab legs, a few prawns and pieces of halibut. Very tasty.
Artichoke Soup was excellent, nice, thick chowder consistency with pieces of artichokes noticable. Just as we remembered it.
The Lamb Chops were palm-sized, thick and juicy. The kind you can hold in one hand and not feel embarassed to gnaw on. With mashed potatoes and string beans, these were yummy.
The Strawberry/Rhubarb Pie was that last bit that put us over the top -- sweet strawberries, tart rhubarb and flaky crust throughout.
A quick drive out to the Mt. Hope Cemetary and back to the main highway set us on our course for home.
If you haven't been to Duarte's in a while, I recommend it! Take Highway 1 south to Pescadero Road turnoff, the left at Stage Road for less than half a block. Make sure to stop at Arcangel Bakery/Market for some delicious artichoke and garlic bread!
