Where to drop a serious wad and 3 hours

Mike G | May 5, 200212:22 AM

Okay, so while I manage to make my way into most of the major restaurants around town sooner or later, since the kids came beginning 3-1/2 years ago my wife and I haven't done the ultimate, Trotterian sort of 3-hour, endless tiny dishes kind of prix fixe-orama like we used to at least a couple of times a year. And I'm kind of thinking that an upcoming anniversary is the occasion for it.

But where? My first thought was Tru but enough people have dissed it as preposterous (and I have to admit, I am put off by things like gold leaf) that I'm kind of off that idea now. I want a transcendant food experience like we had in France at L'Esperance, not a Vegas floor show on a plate.

We have, at some point, eaten at Trotter's (long ago though), Trio (pre-Achatz so that's a possibility), Topolobampo, Zealous, Everest Room (oddly unimpressed), and Ambria, and I think she's been to the Ritz-Carlton Dining Room, so I'd like somewhere in this caliber that we haven't been. (We've also been to zillions of other fine, but not this lavish, restaurants, so you don't need to bring them up. As I say, I'm looking for that ungodly-expensive multi-course experience thing.)

Thanks in advance.
