Dress code issues

We will be in Japan for the first time in a few weeks so what to pack is on my mind. A few places require jackets, so we know what how we need to dress for those. The ones I'm unsure about are with smart casual dress code. For example, would jeans be ok, if match with a nice top for me or a shirt/polo for hubby? What about bars? Would most of them be fine with smart casual?

Dressing up for dinner is not an issue. But we have quite a few places booked for lunch as well and I'm not sure I want to travel around with dressy clothes. For example, we're taking a day trip to Nara so I can feed the deers in the park. We also have lunch booked at Wa Yamamura (3 stars). So, jeans for the deers or pants for the restaurant? Or do I need to bring clothes to change into?

The hotel in Kyoto did not provide us with dress code details. Should we just assume jacket required and overdress or go smart casual? Places we are going in Kyoto are:

Sojiki Nakahigashi
Hyo-tei (breakfast)

Thanks for any advice you can share.
