"Dragon Fruit"

Jimbo | Sep 16, 2004 09:50 PM

I bought some of the neon red "dragon fruit" [don't know its real name} at the Monterey Market today-a produce guy said they were being grown "domestically." I believe it is a cactus "fruit" from Viet Nam or there-abouts and it has become very popular in SE Asia and Hong Kong.I hadn't seen it before locally... The edible inside is white speckled with black sesame sized seeds and reminds me a bit of a giant water chestnut. It has a faint sweet taste but is not particularly flavorful in my experience. It would make a good conversation piece in fruit bowl if nothing else. Each one weighed about 1/2 lb+ @ $2.00/lb. and was smaller than the ones I've usually seen in SE Asia. Just another joy of living in the Bay area....
