This is sad. Blue Plate is one of the best cheap eats spots in Portland. The tomato soup, meatloaf, (house-) mashed potatoes, pot roast and grilled cheese sandwiches were just top notch. It was good ol' fashioned comfort food -- nothing more.
The house sodas with delightfully different flavors were a refreshing break from the big national brands that everyone else served. The syrups were made in house and your soda was mixed while you watched.
The owner/cook is a curmudgeon that gives no quarter to a**hole customers who offer advice on his service or business that conflicts with his vision. You either take the place as it is...warts and all...or you don't come in.
