downtown visitor in a rut (not so bad, either)

After six years of lots of trips to Chicago--both downtown and the inner burbs like Elmwood Park (Johnnie's, Domino's Bakery, dear departed Gianotti's)and Oak Lawn (Palermo's) and lately Bobak's on Archer Ave, my next trip finds me in River North for six bracing early January days and five shivering nights.

I (we, as my S.O. accompanies this trip) always need to get at least once to La Scarola and twice (sometimes more! --as its so homelike) to Santorini in Greektown. We've enjoyed Blackbird as a splurge, but the tab is pretty hefty in these post dot-com days.

Although we tried Lou Mitchell's once, it didn't hold a candle to breakfast at Tempo corner of Chestnut and State.

So for some visitors without a car, updated suggestions would be most welcome--anything within a $10 cab fare of the Hancock Center is fair game.
