Just returned from a runthru of the new downtown certified farmers market. I am pleased to report that it far exceeds my fairly low Grubspectations. Enough produce stands to ensure quality & competition. Lots of flowers. Numerous specialty stands & about 10 food stands. [The Grubber couldnt resist the bacon-wrapped dogs mmmmm.]
Weds from 9 to 2 on 5th St running the full block from Grand to Flower in front of the Central Library at the foot of the Bunker Hill Stairs. DASHes A, B, C, & F stop just ½ block away.
The mkt mgr told me that the mkt will continue past its expiration date (Oct 3) if:
1. Consumer response is good; &
2. Squawks are not heard from various LA entities such as DOT, who have given up 2 lanes of 5th; the library, who may resent the intrusion; Metro, whose buses must operate around the mkt (tho no routes are changed); & God knows who else could come up w a reason to carp.
The Grubs love this market for purely selfish reasons we can get great produce now w/o driving miles. More importantly, this mkt will give the reviving downtown a much stronger pulse. As good hounds well know, there are no cranky people at farmers markets.
If you live or work downtown & would like to see the mkt continue, pls write as the Grubman just did -- now to Jan Perry, our council member, & express your feelings. email@example.com Thx. Gotta go back for a tamale.
