New Downtown Burger Place: Downtown Flames

Zach Georgopoulos | Jan 3, 2003 03:12 PM

Been missing in action for awhile here, so I thought I'd reinstate myself by posting on a place that just opened. Downtown Flames -- hokey name, good burgers. I'm always in search of a good burger place near work, so I was anxiously awaiting the opening of this place. Apparently others were, too, because it was packed today. Regardless, my order came out fast and fresh. The fries are cut from whole potatoes behind the counter, but are not soggy (like, say, In-n-Out). They were crisp and fresh and not too greasy, with just the right amount of salt. They were also generously piled on. I got the "Old Fashioned Swiss Mushroom" burger -- and was very surprised that this was comprised of two patties and must have been almost 1/2 pound. My guess is that all their burgers are, as the menu is silent as to the fact and this burger didn't cost any more than the others. The patties seemed fresh, but were a tad overcooked, making the burger not quite juicy enough for my taste. Regardless, it was very tasty and flame broiled, so I'll give them a break. The bun was very solid, and did not disinegrate -- big plus in my book. In all, I'd say this is a respectable burger place, and it's not like there are many of those downtown. On par with, say, Burger Joynt (except way more generous). My burger, with fries and coke, came to $5.78. They are located on 2d Street, between Market and Mission. Their menu neglects to state the exact address, so that's the best I can do...
