Doughnut Plant and its rivals

Captain Falkenberg | Jan 28, 2004 09:02 AM

On a recent week holiday in New York I tried the following doughnuts from Doughnut Plant (379 Grand St, approx at Delancey St.). I bought them from the Plant store although I also saw them in three other shops

cinnamon bun (not a doughnut)

valrhona hot chocolate (not a doughnut)

The pear was nicest, the dough had pear pieces and a pear flavour. The pomegranate did not have a pomegranate flavour I found, only fresh pomegranate seeds studded on pink icing. The cinnamon bun was also very nice.

I did not enjoy the hot chocolate at all. Even though it was about -10 C I threw most of it away.

I had a doughnut filled with fresh cream from Au Pain Quotidien (Grammercy area). I didn't enjoy it as much as the best of Doughnut Plant. Also had a Krispy Kreme doughnut at JFK airport. Half the price of a DP at $1. Not in the same league.

Also had croissant and fruit cake from Au Pain Quotidien which were both nice.
