My boyfriend and I just returned from a tasty dinner at Doson Noodle House on Carrolton.
The restaurant is very casual, making you feel like you are eating in some one's dinning room, for me that's a plus. They did however, have a tv on which happened to be blaring, and it was hard to talk over.
The service was very friendly, but not too knowledgeable about the food. For example, I asked if a particular dish was fried shrimp and I was told it was grilled. When the food got there it was obviously fried. In this case it didn't matter too much, but beware if you have allergies or other dietary restrictions. For all other purposes they were extremely attentive and accommodating.
We ordered the steamed dumplings ($5) and vegetarian soup ($4) to start. The dumplings were very good, although I admit I am by no means an expert. They were served with a sweet sauce that had chili pepper and scallions. The vegetarian soup had a really hearty toasted sesame flavor. It was packed, I mean packed, full of big pieces of fresh veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery, and bok choy.
For entrees we ordered the beef soup, pho bo, ($12) and black pepper shrimp ($15). The soup was made with beef ball and flank steak. It was served with the usual accouterments on the side. The black pepper shrimp were fried not grilled, but still delicious. It wasn't the regular new orleans batter on the shrimp. They were really nice and crispy on the outside and cooked perfectly, not rubbery, on the inside. The sauce was thick and peppery. The shrimp were served over lightly sautéed vegetables and with a side of white long grain rice. We had enough food left over for a light lunch tomorrow.
With two singha beers the total came to $50 plus tip. It was well worth it.
