My housemate Cynsa snuck out early Saturday morning to the closest bakery, Dos Hermanos, to pick up breakfast treats..
We shared a breakfast sandwich on a delightfully chewy English muffin with bacon, cheese and an egg-like puck. And a Yucatan-style pastry called hojaldra made with layers of pastry filled with cheese, spicy chiles and ham with lots of sugar crystals. Not as puffy and flaky as others I've tried and much more about the filling here.
But that's not all . . . what's hiding in those wrappers?
Lemon bar, coffee cake, pineapple Danish, lardon baguette, pretzel, and polcano baguette. The lemon bar base was actually closer to cake in texture, making it a more delicate pastry then expected. The coffee cake was airy and feather-light. The two baguettes had crisp but not hard crusts. When they put chiles in something, the heat is full-bore. Loved that chewy pretzel.
And here's now they looked when sliced and served to dinner guests that night.
