Dopo is one of those places where, every time I leave the restaurant, I'm at least ten times happier than when I walked in, and the meal this Friday night was no exception. I got a seat at the end of the bar right away, got a recommendation for a great wine by the glass, and then settled down to relax from a stressful week. One thing that helped with this relaxation? The burrata appetizer. Wow, that was an amazing dish. Burrata, a softly scrambled egg and fresh anchoivies. Every bite was creamy and flavorful, with lots of different textures. When I was getting towards the end, I was really wishing that I had just ordered two of these along with some bread. The waitress told me that that was the first day that the burrata had been on the menu, and I meant to ask where it was sourced from, but forgot. I'm not sure how much longer it will be on the menu, but burrata lovers should try to stop by.
I was starting to feel jealous of the pizza eaters around me as I waited for my main course, and then my ricotta gnocchi with beef (and I think another meat) ragu arrived, and it was perfect. The two best times I've had gnocchi have been at Dopo; it's always light and perfect, and the sauce was deliciously meaty without overpowering the rest of the meal.
Since I was being indulgent, I ordered the zeppole for dessert, but ended up taking all but one home with me -- they were perfect with coffee for my breakfast on Saturday and Sunday.
Also, they are now serving housemade ciccoli along with the bread, in place of butter (and instead of the lardo that they used to serve). It's very tasty.
Dopo is a great place to sit at the bar, I think that the friendliness of the staff infects the customers, because I often end up trading eating and cooking ideas with others sitting there.
