A banner promoting fresh, handmade donuts drew me into Schat's, one of the town's crown jewels, last week for the first time in too long. The line-up in the case included raised and cake styles, no old-fashioneds or crullers. I tried a half dozen donut holes for a buck. The glaze was moderately sweet and dull-ish instead of shiny. The donut holes felt heavy and had a denser chewy texture - maybe because the bakery mills its own flour. The most unique part was the clean, non-oily finish. These are definitely new age donuts. I'll have to try more.
