Donuts with pastry cream?

The recent thread about DD's Bavarian Creme donuts inspired this question...

Back when I lived in Ohio, I loved the maple stick donuts from the local bakery chain, Busken. They were filled with a unique cream that wasn't sugary whipped frosting or the yellow, eggy Boston cream pie "creme" -- it was more like a European pastry cream, white and thick, almost a bit savory and salty. I have no idea what to call their donut filling, but I'd love to find something similar.
