Ok, so maybe I jumped the gun a little bit the last time I posted on this. A couple of months ago I had a supremely mediocre burger at the near legendary Donovan's in Woodside and whined to everybody on this board about it. I'm happy to say I returned to D's last weekend for another try and...in short...my cheeseburger rocked.
Without getting too gushy about it, the burger (with sauteed onions, as chowhounds know, is de riguer) arrived on my plate, slightly charred on the outside (I ordered it medium) which, as it turns out, was exactly right for holding all that good juicy stuff inside. Normally I'm rather a slow eater, but the burger was so tasty I kept inhaling and inhaling for a few minutes until the whole thing was gone. Excellent.
I still say McReilly's on Vernon Blvd. in Hunters Point rivals Donovan's (even on a good night) for succulent burger chow (and is more consistent) but this trip back to D's renewed my faith. I plan to return soon.
