Dona Tomas -- still great

Ruth Lafler | Mar 27, 200408:25 PM

My housemate took me to Dona Tomas for my birthday. There had been some mutterings that it had gone downhill, but everything we had was great. In fact, the desserts (never a DT strong point) were the best I've had there.

Carne asada with chimichurri was delicious, and I snuck a bite of my companion's carnitas, which were tender and rich with pork fat. But as I always find, what makes DT special is not the center of the plate but the sides. The fried potatoes that came with the carne asade were cut into tile-shaped pieces like home fries, but were fried crisp on the outside like french fries, and they were perfect. A side dish of sweet potatoes mashed with coconut milk stole the show. It looked like babyfood on the plate, but as my housemate stole her third fork full, she remarked that if this was babyfood, someone should get her a jar. I was slathering it between hot, fresh-made tortillas -- perfect comfort food.
