In October I spotted the opening banners flying at Don Gaspacho as I made my way up to Mission. It opened in March 2014 with a brightly colored contemporary interior and gregarious, fully bilingual proprietor. The paletas and Mexican style ice creams are made in-house.
A fresa con crema (strawberries and cream) paleta made me happy. Balanced sweetness and not too icy. I asked the owner about "gaspacho" and he started to explain that what he serves is very different from the Spanish cold soup. Earlier he had told me he was from Morelia, and I connected the dots to the fresh fruit cocktail, Gaspacho Moreliano, such as served at Oakland's El Nido. He invited me to come back during my favorite fruit season to try it.
