Old trick?

A friend and I have a holiday tradition of a basic steak, baked potato, Caesar salad meal. I usually put the steaks on the grill (I'm in Southern Cal) but this year my grill isn't working. I know I can broil them, but I thought it might be fun to try a new method ( for me. I haven't done it.) Searing them in a grill pan and then finishing in the oven. I'm a pretty good cook....but don't do a lot of beef. She'll have a porterhouse or ribeye.....I'll have a filet mignon. Help please.....wise and knowing chowhound friends.......
