A dissent on DECO

foodie | Dec 19, 2003 08:31 PM

I ate last night at DECO, in Ventura, and I feel compelled to say that it was one of the worst meals at a supposedly "fine" restaurant I have ever encountered. The squid appetizer came in a nice enough butter and garlic sauce, but the squid was tasteless--no match for the wonderful calamari I've repeatedly had at the Chez Panisse Cafe. The paella was truly inedible--the shrimp tasted off and the whole things had a distinctly unpleasant and quite overpowering flavor. Finally, the coup de grace, as it were, was dessert, which was listed on the menu as "Fresh Seasonal Berries." When I asked if they were really fresh, in December, no less, the waiter said they were. When they arrive the berries came covered in a gloppy sugar syrup, just like the frozen berries you buy at the supermarket. Which, of course, is exactly what they tasted like.
