So I finally made it to Moshi Moshi in Northampton for a sushi lunch and while I was anticipating greatness, Ileft pretty disappointed.
They do serve a lunch buffet whick looked great -- big platters of maki rolls and some tempura items -- perhaps I should have gotten the buffet...but I didn't.
Service was exceedingly slow. We sat down at 1:15 and did not receive our food until 1:45 -- for a Northampton lunch, this is way below standard.
I ordered three rolls -- a Yellow tail handroll, which came as a regular roll, a Montauk Roll, which was a tuna/avocado/tobiko combo, and a New York Roll which was smoked salmon, apple and spinach -- unorthodox to be sure, but actually the tastiest of the bunch.
First issue -- the rice tasted, I dunno...old, I guess. Hard to describe, but far from that tender yet toothsome texture I anticipate, and with a decidedly unseasoned flavor. Bleech!
I thought the fish was only average and rather skimpy in terms of portion size. The yellowtail was stringy and bland, the tuna was OK, but unremarkable, and the salmon was actually fine and the most generous portion on the plate. While untraditional, the smoked salmon/spinach apple combo was really quite nice -- a nice contrast of salty and sweet, velvety fish and crunchy apple with a nice green accent from the spinach. All of the avocado used in all the preparations was underripe and therefore an unpleasant texture and flavor to encounter. Garnishes like tobiko and sesame seeds were skimpy and the pickled ginger was sliced very thick, so was stringy and tough in the mouth.
Portions were smaller and more expensive than other sushi joints in town, so that, combined with the lackluster quality makes me think I'll leave this one off the list. I may go back and sample the lunch buffet -- especially if it is all you can eat. Perhaps they put more care and attention into the buffet than their other items.
Anyone else have similarly disappointing experiences here? I'd loved to gt talked out of my negativity!
