new (to me) discovery at Toraya

We eat embarassingly often at Toraya but I have always stuck to sushi and sashimi. Last night for some reason I wasn't in the mood (abducted by aliens???) so I ordered the salmon okabe -- broiled salmon pieces stuffed with tofu, covered in miso paste and wrapped in bamboo leaves. It was FABULOUS! The salmon skin was shatteringly crispy, the salmon perfectly cooked, the miso was a wonderful salty counterpoint. (Next time I would unwrap both bamboo leaf bundles right away, as the skin on the second bundle had lost some of its crispiness by the time I got to it.) Also had the asparagus salad which was tasty and beautifully arranged, and we shared the agedashi tofu to start -- yummy deep-fried tofu in a delicious sauce with those teeny-tiny mushrooms and lots of grated daikon and scallions. I'm glad to say that business seems to have picked up here -- we used to be terrified they'd go under. Lots of regulars too -- we all recognize each other at this point...

Toraya, 890 Mass Ave, Arlington (across from Stop & Shop)
