What products have you enjoyed that Trader Joe's no longer carries?
The Raspberry Macaron Cake in the frozen section. And from WAY back in the day, the Berry Charlotte, also in the frozen case. Exceptional.
Heartbroken to learn this week that my beloved salmon & vegetable croquettes have been discontinued!
http://www.whatsgoodattraderjoes.com/...
Discontinued elsewhere because Trader Joe's picked it up and is now making it: Milton's Bitesize Honey & Corn Crackers. These crackers are no longer available, and Trader Joe's has come out with a suspiciously similar-tasting cracker. Do others agree?
Not the same as the cornbread crisps. Ingredients are quite different, as is the serving size and appearance.
No, I am 99% sure that the TJ's version are made by United Snacks of America, the company that makes the Farmer's Pantry brand of cornbread crisps.
https://www.farmerspantry.farm/cornbr...
They look the same and the ingredients are almost identical. TJ's version has the oil and sugar switched in order. I'm guessing it's because TJ's asked them to make them slightly sweeter. The nutritional values are also slightly different but in accord with slight tweaks in the recipe.
The Umami paste appears to be gone!
Apparently the 100 calorie whole wheat sandwich rounds have been discontinued. :-( In fact, I believe all varieties of the rounds are discontinued. I didn’t see any in my store today.
Could it be a temporary issue?
Seems like those are very similar to the Arnold or Orowheat or Kroger brands. Try those if the TJ's are really discontinued.
All of those might even be from the same company.
They have a new 100 calorie sandwich option. I think its called Pocket Bread
I just bought them a few days ago! They should still be around!
TJs in NYC has started cycling into the stores a new kind of packed "fresh" salmon (well, it's pre-frozen but then thawed for the store) in a vacuum-pack instead of in the usual plastic wrap-and-shell packaging. Everything about the packaging looks different, including the fact that the fillets are large pieces and not several small/cut pieces. They may have changed providers entirely.
It appears a casualty of this change has been the availability of the Herb Dijon Salmon. There isn't a similar option in the new packaging, and the older item hasn't been seen in the stores in a few weeks. There are people asking about it on Twitter. Looks to be a goner.
Just found out they discontinued frozen shitake mushrooms, these were my staple items for making miso soup!! :(
Frozen seasoned Rack of Lamb.
Was told it has been discontinued in Vancouver, WA., & San Jose, CA. Wanted it for Eadter dinner. Very disappointing as we all love it.
Why, why, why????!
I spoke with someone at TJ's and I hear that the South African Smoked Seasoning Salt will be back in the summer. It's a seasonal item. Amazon has it now for $16.00....WTH?
Another one I noticed recently is TJ's Coffee Syrup ($4.49 at TJ's), listed by third[arty sellers for around $14, and apparently bought by people at that price! (And contrary to a comment there that it's been discontinued, it was readily available a week ago at one of my local stores, and I was told by someone peering intently at a computer monitor at the front desk that it's neither seasonal, nor has it been discontinued.)
But it's very unlikely that "Amazon" is selling a TJ's product, it's probably a third-party seller. Anyone can sell anything on Amazon that doesn't contravene their listing policies, and third-party sellers set their own prices. A lot of things like this - stuff that isn't generally available everywhere, or online, or discontinued products of all sorts, get listed on Amazon at prices *much* higher their MSRP. Apparently, and for reasons I've never even begun to understand, enough people are willing to pay wildly inflated prices for enough things that it's worth "someone's" while to go the trouble and incur the various seller fees to list them there. The same thing happens on Ebay to an extent, but it seems to be much more common on Amazon...
It's obviously worth people's while to sell stuff that many customers have a track record of buying. In this case, people have obviously paid far more than $16 per bottle for it (why, I can't fathom). I meant that you see a lot of odd-lots of discontinued products with no reviews at all listed at sometimes freakishly high prices that may or may not ever sell (but which sellers still have to pay fees on). But all it takes is one uninformed sucker who's too lazy to search the Web, and it's almost like winning a small lottery for that seller...<sigh>
Was told yesterday in store that frozen OJ is being discontinued.
I am in panic!
I didn't see my favorite French cultured butter in blue package. I really hope they didn't discontinue it as I think it's the best butter you can find in USA just for $3 bucks.
Shopped at TJs in Sarasota FL today, mainly to purchase Italian Roast coffee beans. Was told the product had been discontinued. Still listed (today) on Amazon, direct and 3rd party suppliers, all @ 2X, 3X TJ's price.
I love that coffee and have been drinking it for years. I also found it gone at my TJ's in Ohio and worried that this was the case. I have two cans left. I would sure like to hear if you or anyone else finds something else that tastes similar.
Waneditor, I thought you'd like to know that I was delighted to find that Eight O'Clock brand whole bean Italian Roast Espresso coffee tastes *exactly* like Trader Joe's.
What to you mean by "listed ... direct"? Trader Joe's doesn't sell online at all, via Amazon or on any other website. And for that matter, if any of the Amazon listings is shipped by Amazon itself, I'd bet a lot of money that it's being "sold by" a third-party vendor and merely being "fulfilled by" Amazon.
But otherwise, yeah, it routinely amazes me what (apparently a lot of) people are willing to pay for some Trader Joe's products on Amazon. And they're not just "willing" to pay those prices, they write swooning reviews saying how the stuff is "totally worth" ridiculous prices. Go figure...<rme>
What I miss most is chocolate almond bark and frozen arctic char. I still look for them.
Looks like the Churro bites are gone - I have not seen them in any Atlanta area stores for a couple weeks. They had become one of my guilty pleasures.
I still have one bag in my pantry, so have not looked for them. I am in ATL area, too. I will check my local store this weekend and report back. That would be a shame, I love them.
I saw those churro bites last week at my store. They had a display at the end of the dessert freezer with a sign saying something about how great they were with ice cream.
I wish they would bring back the recently discontinued blueberry and triple berry oatmeal packets. Those are what brought me into TJ to buy other items. Without those I may just go to Aldi and Whole foods only. :'(
The flourless chocolate cake! OMG how could they? It froze so well and I could take it out last minute and microwave - everyone thought it was homemade. Argh
Has the Whole Grain Crispbread been discontinued? My local stores now have the gluten-free crispbread but I don't see the Whole Grain variety. A little on the expensive side ($3.99 for a 7.75 oz pkg) but they were so good!
I can't think of anything more un-American then discontinuing lemonade, even if its frozen . My kids love it. What's going on with this company? Happy Memorial day everyone.
The frozen Korma Fish Curry is gone! None in the freezer, no sign. The checker said it was "temporary." They might have warned us.
Dynamo Juice is an excellent product with a blend of Juice and Vegetables. I didn't see it on the shelf when I recently visited the store.
Just found out they discontinued frozen porcini mushrooms, i used to stock up on those - love to make soup and use them for other delicious recipes. Today used the last 2 packets and really don’t know how to survive now.
That must be incredibly frustrating. Frozen is going to be hard to get from another supermarket seller.
I tend to sometimes order dry goods from Amazon and decided to look this up, and this was one of the more conveniently packaged options at the general price-per-ounce cost of $5 https://www.amazon.com/Mycological-Dr... (somewhere in my search results, I saw a powdered option from another manufacturer)
I know Amazon suggestions don't help any customers who don't have Prime or who object to their treatment of everyone/anyone, but I figured I'd throw that out there. I did look it up on Penzey's but didn't come up with anything. Kalustyan's did have some porcini options: search at https://foodsofnations.com/
There’s the frozen “mushroom medley “ which is certainly not the same , but those in combination with some rehydrated porcini (which can be expensive!) will create a nice mushroomy flavor.
Be sure to use the soaking liquid from rehydrating the mushrooms, just watch for any grit
I miss the Turkish honey. I got addicted to it and it disappeared. Other honeys taste bland in comparison.
Oh no! I love the Turkish honey. I mix some in with my fresh blueberries and the European organic fat free plain yogurt. Yet another disappointment by Trader Joe's.
I picked up some raw wild Himalayan honey a while back and it had a very distinctive flavor and viscosity but I haven't seen it on the shelf since I finished that small jar.
The mini croissants in the red box are discontinued. Made by Galaxy Desserts. Replaced with a new type made in Belgium. I haven't tried the latter, but the ones in the red box were probably my favorite item at TJ's. Very disappointed. They still carry them at Williams Sonoma but for much more $$$.
I live in northern New Jersey and was crushed to discover that TJ's discontinued the European-style chocolate yogurt and the French-style par-baked (non-frozen) rolls. Both items were really good and regular staples for me. I would go to all of the 4 locations in Manhattan and stock up, but my roommate is unnaturally attached to the vintage refrigerator in our apartment, which barely fits just what groceries *I* buy...I would have nowhere to fit a slew of yogurt & rolls. BUT, if anyone knows if the Manhattan stores still have them, maybe I'd just buy several, instead of dozens.
I know i saw those rolls at the UWS store on 93/Columbus last week-almost bought them myself but totally cannot deal with having my oven on! Definitely call before making a special trip there, it’s not far from the 1 train
bummer about the chocolate yogurt. haven't had it in a while. wish i had picked up some.
Apparently the Punjab Eggplant Indian Fare and whatever other boxed Indian TJ's had was discontinued in favor of the new varieties.
Citrus gum drops. Not sure if they are discontinued or not. I was in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago and they didn’t know what I was talking about. It’s been about three years since the last time I got them in Nashville. We are getting our first store here I. Memphis (Germantown) end of this year. Really hoping the will carry them.
Has anyone seen the sriracha lattice cut potato chips? Was running errands and the kids were squabbling and was looking forward to a little tasty treat. . . didn't get to ask because squabbling kids
Anyone seen the marinated mushrooms lately? Bonus points if you have in nyc, haven’t seen them on the shelf or any sign on the shelf, it’s been a while since i last looked for them....
seems the chocolate bra with walnuts and toffee is gone. fortunately there are still others, but that was good one. Hope they don't lose the DC peanut butuh cups
I haven't seen the frozen Danish pancakes (little round things) in a while, and I can't find the frozen latkes either. Haven't asked what happened to them.
I just learned that Trader Joe's has discontinued the Holiday Challah (round) with RAISINS. They will only be carrying the plain. Very disappointing. A round challah without raisins misses the point. Plus, it tastes really good.
Does anyone know anything about the Serrano Salsa Fresca being discontinued? Can't find it in any Seattle Trader Joes
Hi! I'm just making a general comment and NOT really meaning to be critical...but how do people here feel about asking those commenting on this topic to check with the Customer Service desk to be sure something's discontinued and not just out of stock? There's a big difference! One can do the same by calling the store or the corporate number; they're very friendly and will gladly check...
Agreed! Most of the things people come here to complain about being discontinued are either just out of stock that day at your store, possibly seasonal, may be experiencing a supplier issue and are only temporarily missing from shelves. I work at TJs - we can look it up for you.
If you look more closely, you'll see that in quite a few cases, people are incorrectly told that products have been discontinued. In my experience, and those of a least a couple of other posters, they information we're given by TJ's employees is often very unreliable, even when they're starting directly at their computers at the front desk.
I too have asked several times at customer service about products I can't find at TJ's (Boston area) and the clerks look at their computers and say they don't know. If discontinued, if will be restocked and when...they look sad and shake their heads. Yes, they are friendly, and yes they check, but they say the computer doesn't give them specific information.
Citrus Chicken Salad, Curried Cauliflower, Greens/Beans/Grains
I am getting very gun-shy about adopting a TJ product, only to have it disappear in a few months!
For the potato pancakes/latkes, I've been told both that they're discontinued and also just "out of stock" for awhile. Not sure which is true, but it's been over two months and they aren't back yet. These have been a staple in our home for years, and hubs especially is heartbroken.
I like the fully cook rack of lamb. Please bring it back
I was told at Atlanta store that all frozen rack of lamb wa discontinued.
blue costello cheese. Darn the Luck ! ! !
Does anyone remember the flavored couscous packages.? They had one with dried cranberries and Moroccan seasoning that we loved. Has anyone seen something similar in another store?
Can't find any flavored couscous with cranberries except for one at Walmart:
Sam’s Choice Curried Couscous With Almonds & Cranberries
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sam-s-Choi...
It would be pretty easy to make your own, though. You could just add spices to taste plus dried cranberries although there are lots of recipes on the internet if you need some ideas beyond the ingredient list on that package. I have made couscous with raisins, dried apricots, and almonds and also with dried cherries. Couscous makes a good cold pasta salad, too.
Sounds like this from the company near east plus some dried cranberries which you could certainly add separately. This line is widely available at regular grocery stores, just depends if they carry this flavor
Tea Tree Oil soap has been discontinued I was told. Does anyone know of a comparable, inexpensive, unscented soap?
I was told that the crab cakes have been discontinued. This is the box of two that were mostly crab (almost no filler) and sold in a light blue box in the freezer section. So bummed out,
does anyone know why TJs doesn't have the Tea Tree bar soaps anymore??
My husband reported last night that he thinks our beloved flax chia pb has been discontinued. He didn´t see a spot for it on the shelves. Does anyone have intel?
We have been buying 2, 3, 4 packets of the TJ's Butter Fudge at all time (here in Northern NJ and NYC) assuming that such a staple item would be there forever. This past weekend much to our shock and chagrin the item was not in its usual place... We asked a worker who directed us to a manager who gave us the very bad news that they were not out of stock, but that it was a discontinued item. Speechless.
Can anyone recommend a substitute anywhere.... or, perhaps even better, a tried and true formula for making it at home? Thanks!
The ingredients are very simple, though you will need a candy thermometer. Looks more similar to this scottish recipe since it uses sweetened condensed milk like the TJs fudge
https://www.thespruceeats.com/traditi...
Nigella has basically the same recipe but slightly different method, the mixing at the end is what creates a more dry texture so she uses an “electric whisk”
https://www.nigella.com/recipes/vanil...
I haven't seen two of my TJ's staples in months -- Tea Tree Oil soap and Gummy Bears. Bummer if these have been discontinued. I emailed asking about both items and didn't get a response.
I learned many years ago not to fall in love with any Trader Joe’s products. The only constant for their 30+ years in business is the canned corn! They contract with off-the-wall companies by time, not volume. So they’ll carry a product for a few years then it’s gone forever.
The mfgr can’t produce the item at the same contracted cost and for us it’s discontinued.
None of their TJ "labeled" products are made by high quality, name brand, reliable companies so maybe it’s a good thing for discontinued items. I think most barely exceed our FDA guidelines. Of course TJ’s will tell us otherwise.
Their liability has drastically escalated because now they sell hard liquor. Their quality has changed to be more of the lower level like Aldi’s.
So enjoy your favorites while they’re available because although they’re great to their employees they aren’t so great to the customers who keep them in business.
-
I disagree with your claim that none are made by high quality companies. Most are. Maybe not by big names known to the consumer, but still a false assertion.
They do run into supply issues periodically, and they do discontinue goods. TJs is a business after all, and if an item doesn't make them money they are wise to discontinue it. That said, many of the items cited above as discontinued simply are not so. In some cases there are temporary shortages, in other cases a particular store stopped carrying but others do. Store content is at the manager's discretion with TJ, not mandated by corporate.
Sorry to disappoint you but you are wrong wrong wrong. And totally wrong about the ‘manager’s discretion’.
I'm curious, not trying to start drama, but how do you know so much about the inner workings of TJs? You don't seem to be a fan. Are you a competitor? Not that I care, I think a competitor has just as much say as anyone else, as long as everything is true.
The almond coffee cake.
The Porta 6 Cava. We've been told for the past 4 months that it is "unavailable".
This was a great everyday sparkling wine.
The frozen croissants appear to be gone. There is a replacement for them but they're not the same. Way back, I miss the sliced orange bread they used to have. Maybe 25 years ago. It was so good!
Two items:
Dorot frozen basil cubes. They now sell the garlic and ginger Dorot cubes, but have discontinued the basil. I really liked those basil cubes.
Chocolate fondue: they had this for the past few years at holiday time, but not this year. It was really good and came in a little microwaveable cup. I asked at the desk and they said "huh, I haven't seen that this year..." so I presume it's discontinued.
My favs that were discontinued were discontinued back in the '90's: Apple Pear Concerto and Lupini Bean Pasta. I choose not to get hooked on anything at TJ's (easy because their locations are not convenient to me), because I know they will discontinue it. We do keep trying to get a TJ's in the Lake Wylie area of SC though.
I noticed that Trader Joe’s no longer carries the frozen fire roasted peppers and onions.
Also missing is the frozen breaded cod,
I try not to become too addicted to any one product because it ALWAYS disappears from the shelves.
Anyone else miss the seedless blackberry jam?
Here's the thread for 2019:
https://www.chowhound.com/post/discon...
You might want to post about it there instead of here in the 2018 thread if you want to discuss it and ask about alternatives. If you were just venting, well then, carry on!
Trader Joe's had a "dog trainer recommendation" ad on the front of the dog treat package. I bought it for a gift. It was very well-received by the canine recipient. Now I can't get any more at Trader Joe's.
