Went w/ my lady friend this past Sat. (1/28). Started off with the most requested appetizer, the samosa chat! It was fantastic. The flavors and heat were just perfect. But that's about it for the highlights.
I had the whole mustard fish which is tilapia. I've only had whole fish once before (at Asia de Cuba where it was a home run, but if I recall correctly it was grilled there). Well, I could only take about 3 bites. It was just way too fishy tasting and left a serious aftertaste, which I had to rinse out with water, which I had to keep asking to be refilled. At least Jackson Diner starts you off with a pitcher! The sauce just didn't seem to have anything but a strong mustard flavor and the boiled egg just didn't seem right.
My lady friend had the chicken tikka masala, but she requested mild and boy was it ever. But the chicken was not tender at all and you had to use a knife to cut it. The sauce was bland and about as ho-hum as can be. Very unsatisfying and a huge disappointment.
I was expecting so much more, and after being teased with the samosa chat, thought we were in for a real treat. The mustard fish came highly recommended by the waiter, who was pleasant and did inform us about the grand opening this past Sunday.
It'll be tough to go back after this experience, especially since there's just no easy way to get there from where we come from which is the JFK area. Queens Blvd. and Broadway are just total PITA to traverse...
