Disappointment at Roma

sara | Jan 1, 2003 03:24 PM

Stopped in at a nearly empty (I know, should've known better ....) Roma last night for an unplanned New Year's dinner, and was utterly disappointed. Not wanting to indulge in the 6 course prix fixe (for $45) dinner, we ordered ala carte off the prix fixe menu. I suffered through a bland tomato and smoked mozzarella salad (I was assured the tomatoes were vine picked and good, but no...), and chestnut gnocchi with 3 shrimp that was smothered in a cream sauce ($21!!). My friend had the ricotta involtini that was supposed to have lobster with it, but they were just little bits of lobster--had to hunt them out. All this plus a slice of semi-decent chocolate kaluha cake, and the tab was $70 before tip...

I've had good experiences at Roma in the past--on one occasion I had a spectacular special- parpadelle with lamb and fresh figs, and the ricotta involtini (minus lobster) is also usually pretty good-- which is why we went there in the first place. And the service is always friendly, but slow.
But after last night's dinner, I think I won't be going back.
