Disappointment at Cobras and Matadors

Greg Henry | May 9, 2003 12:14 PM

I went to a birthday dinner for a friend last night at Cobras and Matadors. I have been there before and enjoyed the experience. It was never a GREAT restaurant, but it was lively with an interesting array of tapas, certainly fun in a group.

Last night's experience was at best forgetable at worst a complete rip off...We were a large group (12) which may have been part of the problem. We ordered ALOT of food. Most of it was bland, mushy and sloppily presented. The only exceptions were crunchy lentils and ham, and the plate of manchego and serrano ham. Both of these dishes were quite good, but not enough to save the rest of the meal. The "prawns" seemed to me to be frozen shrimp, the beet salad nothing more than meclin mix and tasteless cold (canned?) beet slices, the squid was fishy, rubbery and unedible, the baby clams were very garlicky which seemed to mask a dirty flavor and a mushy texture...The server was good at keeping everything coming at respectable pace and telling us what she was bringing though. I am sure we were a tough table being so large, so kudos to her.

The worst part was the bill. It was a shocking $44.00 per person for food and tip! The wine was provided by the husband of the birthday girl as they own a very good wine shop, so that part of the evening was nice. Sadly after paying so much for so little I left hungry...
