disappointing Smith St. Kitchen lunch

bean | Jul 15, 2002 06:03 PM

went with a friend for lunch today at smith street kitchen and it was culinarily disappointing. service was fine (tho the waitress was a little rushed due to a large 'shower' party going on in the main room) and very nice (she ended up no charging us for the mineral water because i criticized (nicely) something i ate but that i didn't want to return (meal was over).

anyway, my friend had gazpacho with a large poached shrimp. it was ok but severely underseasoned. no heat (spicey) and no salt or pepper. then she had the crab cakes - 3 of them and they were fine (tho i don't care about crab at all) but served with no sauce whatsoever (tho some was brought when requested) and served on top of some rather undercooked matchstick carrots and greenbeans (french) and once again, no seasoning.

i had the lobster roll with salad on the side. the salad had a nondescript vinagrette with no seasoning and the lobster roll had minimal lobster, lettuce, tomato, a nice brioche roll some avocado and simply rolling in mayo. ALL you tasted was mayo. just gooooooooooooooozing out of the roll. not a hint that there was lobster within.

additionally, the wall next to where we were sitting was rather dirty.

i've heard that there have been some personnel changes there lately and it seems not to the better.
