Intrigued by the enthusiastic recommendations for the chocolate caramels at Sketch, and knowing how great their toffee is, I made a visit there last Saturday to check them out.
let me preface by saying that I am not one to shy away from spending money on foods that are worth it. However, having to hand over more than $15 (cash) for one small gelato, one (small) bag of toffee, and one (small-ish) bag of chocolate caramels did make me gasp. I work in the specialty food industry and am very familiar with the price of ingredients..and it still made me gasp.
Anyway, I would have been ok with the price had the product been good. The gelato was good (pistachio and chocolate, actually much better than my last visit there several months ago). The toffee was excellent as remembered. However, the caramels were...dreadful, actually. They were dry and crumbly in texture, there was no taste of caramel at all...they were actually more like old, dried out, chalky chocolate truffles. If I didn't live in the city, I would definitely have taken them back. I'm not sure if I got a bad batch, product that had gone bad somehow, or what, but for such a small operation where everything is handmade, I don't think there's much excuse for letting products of such poor quality slip through. I'm not sure what happened, and if I have a chance to sample them again (for free), I'd try...but I definitely won't be spending my own money on this again.
Any others with similar experience?
