I am a transplant from the NYC area who has live in NOLA for the past 7 years. I've been to most of the restaurant that are written about and recommended regularly on Chowhounds (i.e. Clancy's, Upperline, Dick and Jenny's, Jacquemos, Galatoires, Commanders, etc.) and agree with the rave reviews they receive. However, I had never tried Brigtsens until this past Friday night when I took visitng family members. I must say that I was a bit disappointed. The service was good but the food lacked a "freshness" that should be expected at higher end restaurants (I paid over $60 a head (incl. wine)). The shrimp in the BBQ shrimp appetizer where tiny and tasted as if they had been frozen for a long time (the BBQ sauce was yummy though). I, and two others in my party, got the "famous" seafood platter. All of the oyster preparations tasted as if they were prepared a week earlier. While I understand that practicality in the restaurant industry demands things be prepared in advance, nothing leapt off the plate as being "out of this world." Perhaps its a matter of being past its prime or perhaps it was just an off night for the kitchen. But when your trying to impress guests and have just one or a few chances to try something special, its very disappointing to not be able to rely on reputation in selecting a good restaurant. Next time I will go with restaurants that I know first hand to be consistently good.
