Yesterday a group of 9 had lunch at Donneckers after a visit to The National Christmas Center in Paradise.
Six of us were somewhat disappointed with both the food and service. Four of the six had had dinner with Shola 2 nights before so to be fair I would guess anything would have suffered by comparison, but the 2 who had not dined at Studio Kitchen were also underwhelmed with their lunches.
We found both the seafood en croute and the crabcakes to be bland and uninteresting. One of the six thought that the wild mushroom soup was excellant, but the others who had it thought it compared poorly to the mushroom soup served at Longwood gardens. The asparagus soup got slightly better reception.
I was curious about the "Floating Island" dessert and asked the waitress, specifically, if it contained meringue. She said it did not, so I ordered it. It was a meringue. The sauce was really good. We were also charged for a much more expensive bottle of wine than the wine we ordered.
So either Donneckers was having a bad day, or others who have given it very good reviews have much different taste than we do. One of the other 3 also posts here, and I think she and her husband were pleased, so perhaps it is just a matter of taste.
