Ok, I'm in a good mood this morning (see my Despana post to see why), which is why I'm going to reveal information I should rightly keep to myself and a few lifelong friends. I was in DiPalo yesterday and saw marcona almonds going for (drum roll, please) $9.99 a pound, which is by far the cheapest I've ever seen them for in the city. Two weeks ago I was in Zabar's and was crowing afterward when I got them for $12 a pound. Incidentally, these are the same brand (Mitica is the importer) sold by every other place in town (Whole Foods, Murray's) for like $16-$18 a pound. Now, the next question is: How do you buy them without waiting on line at DiPalo all day: the answer: go weekdays, preferably during an off hour. You'll be in and out in ten minutes, in most cases. Ok, as far as I'm concerned, I've done my mitzvah for the year, am off the hook from doing anymore volunteer work, and can return to the kitchen to resume cooking. Have fun.
