Dinner at Hana Sushi last night (long)

Raconteur | Jun 21, 2006 10:21 AM

I stopped off at Hana Sushi last night for dinner en route to Harvard Square. I've had decent (though not thrilling) meals there in the past. Three slices of sashimi were the same cost as two pieces of nigiri sushi.

I had:

seaweed salad: pretty much run of the mill seaweed salad, but an ENORMOUS portion, enough that I am having it for lunch today. Nicely seasoned.

Mackeral (saba) sashimi: A little dry and a bit vinegary for my taste

Salmon (sake) sashimi: very tender and buttery, marbled with fat. I am not enough of a sushi expert to know if the fat is considered a good thing, but it was a yummy piece of fish. THe last slice was a little tougher than the first two.

White tuna sashimi: I love this fish. It was a little too cold at first, clearly not long out of the freezer, but was otherwise just fine.

flying fish roe, salmon roe nigiri: yummy

one piece of uni nigiri (they were out and so gave me one piece, didn't charge me): bad. not fresh, they shouldn't have given me any.

eel (unagi) nigiri: good, but the sauce was applied too liberally for my taste, so the fish was a bit obscured.

The fish postions were generous without being overwhelming. The rice was good, fresh and firm, not too seasoned but tasty.

Decor is pleasant, probably a bit dark if you sit in the back. Service was a little slow, considering it was early on a Tuesday evening and there was only one other couple in the place.

The meal came to about $40.

A decent place to go if you're in need of a fix.
