Dinner for eclectic/problematic eight on the UES

Im wondering whether anyone can give me suggestions. My husband and I must invite 3 other couples for dinner on the last Friday of January. The only problem is that one couple is the gourmand/foodie type who always complain about "the mediocrity of the majority of new york restaurants" (they always take us out to either Craft, WD-50 or Babbo) and another is an elderly (late 70s) Jewish couple who like EXTREMELY PLAIN food (overcooked dry fish, chinese or greek food, "Sardi's" is one of their favorites) and complain about "the fancy-shmancy complicated restaurants". The last couple are up for anything/not a problem.
Obviously, we wouldnt want to go to Alain Ducasse nor KFC. Not an extremely loud hip joint either. But also, not a quiet, formal March. Hopefully, as everyone lives in the UES, a 40 block radius to the east 60s would be convenient but NOT a deal breaker.
Any thoughts?
