My wife and I were on the Amalfi Coast last week and we had dinner at Don Alfonso, which is in a small town about 30 mins. west of Positano along the Amalfi Coast road. There have been several postings on chowhound in the past. We had a truly wonderful meal. The service was formal but not at all pretentious; the prices were reasonable (especially given the strong dollar -- around $170 for both of us, including a few glasses of wine). We ordered the tasting menu -- eight courses, most of which were sublime. I can't do them all justice, but perhaps the most outstanding dish was the second appetizer -- stacked rings of tender squid, filled with a lovely mix of peas, potatoes, beans and other wonderfully fresh vegetables. It was a sublime mix of flavors. The dessert was also amazing -- something called "impressions of espresso;" it was as beautiful as it was delicious. Don Alfonso -- as many of you know -- has a terrific olive oil that is available from www.realgoodfood.com; they also sold in the annex what looked to be a beautiful cookbook (too large to carry home, given all the olive oil we purchased). I'd love to hear from anyone who has tried (with success) to replicate any of their dishes at home.
