Friday evening we had a most disappointing dinner at
the Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford.
The crab salad billed as "Maine crab" was made up of little TINY shreds instead of nice chunks of backfin, and there weren't too many of those. The flavor was a nice, clean, citrusy one with a couple of teeny paper thin slices of fennel, but for a blue crab lover it was a bust. The scallops were o.k. but not memorable. The lamb was actually unpleasant....strong and tough, even though it was cooked med. rare.
A warm chocolate cake was dry and the banana ice cream
might have been good but was pretty well melted.
I had a taste of someone else's risotto with lobster..
Ho Hum and undersalted. It was loose instead of being gummy but didn't seem "creamy". The flavor was so-so.
We had good service and the corkage fee for our magnum
of wine was waived ($50).
The others in our party seemed satisfied, but then,
they aren't chowhounds. So as not to be royal pains
we didn't say anything but I feel obliged to alert
those looking for more than atmosphere, especially
at that price ($70 for 4 courses without wine, per person).
Oh yeah, the bread was good. A nice sour whole wheat.
