I hosted a business dinner at Beacon last night for 10 people (me, 5 colleagues from New York and 4 colleagues visiting from Latin America). Picked Beacon because we wanted American food, choices for non-meat eaters, room for a large party, and proximity to the visitors’ hotel. I was a bit concerned because I hadn’t been to Beacon for a couple of years and recent comments by CH’ers complained of poor service.
Happy to say the service was great. Our waiter was personable, knowledgeable and attentive without hovering. Good suggestions on what to try, no mistakes, nicely paced meal. And he had plenty of back-up from other staff for our large group. I note that we were seated on the first floor, while other posters had been upstairs. The room was lively, but not too loud to have a conversation at a large table.
As for the food, it was good to excellent. Stand-outs were the wood-roasted oysters, steaks, scallops and the seasonal dishes, especially side of summer succotash. My only quibble was the roasted asparagus and egg. I was expecting a runny egg in which to dip the asparagus, but it was essentially hard-boiled.
Five fish choices but only one vegetarian entrée (a summer vegetable risotto).
Dinner for 10, before tax and tip, was $850. That was three courses for most of us, and four bottles of wine. Not inexpensive, but you can spend a lot more in midtown.
