Dining with Opera

Anthony Martinelli | May 1, 2000 06:18 PM

A favorite restaurant of mine from the ‘60s and ‘70s was Asti’s Restaurant which was devoted to opera. The staff would sing operatic selections as they performed their duties, and occasionally a professional singer in for dinner could be prevailed upon to sing an aria.

I wanted to get up-to-date information on Asti’s for a friend who loves opera, and found a listing in Zagat’s 2000 Millennium issue dated Oct 27 1999 and on the internet as: Asti’s Restaurant, 13 E 12th St., New York, NY 10003-4495

The Zagat’s listing is only six months old, but last week when I called two numbers, 212-741-9105 (from Zagat’s) and 212-242-9868 (from the internet), I got the same message saying “…disconnected; no further information.”

Does anyone have any further information about Asti's? If Asti’s has closed, are they likely to re-open in the future? Are there other restaurants in Manhattan that combine dining with operatic entertainment? Thanks for any information you can provide.
