Dining in Naples

Some people say you either love Naples or hate it. We hated it. Mostly because we stayed in a hotel near the horribly disgusting area near the train station. We left after 24 hours. However, we were able to go to Pizzeria Brandi…the alleged inventor of the pizza margarita.

We waited for an hour for the place to open. Though the opening time in Frommers said 7pm, the place didn’t open until 5 minutes before 8pm. We were seated amongst a sea of tourists (the majority were Americans) which made a little suspect. We ordered one margarita, one with mushrooms, and one alla Romana which was with anchovies. The margarita was very good, the sauce being slightly tart but again vibrant. The crust was thinner and slightly less crunchy than back home in New York. Still good nevertheless. The one with mushrooms was a little disappointing. The mushrooms tasted as if they were canned or jarred but I hesitate to make that accusation without being entirely sure. The pizza with anchovies was also excellent, the salty aroma of the anchovies permeating much of the pizza. The veal milanese was also excellent—a thin slice of veal fried with very, very, very tasty breadcrumbs. A neighboring table ordered an amazing rigatoni with clams and garlic dish that I eyed with some envy. Overall, a solid meal.
